Otto contracted syphilis in around 1900, causing him excruciating pain for the last two years of his life. Following the murder of his brother Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914, Otto's son Charles became heir presumptive Charles inherited the throne two years later. Upon the death of their father in May 1896, Otto's brother Franz Ferdinand became heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne.
